Bedroom layout guide: bed sizes, clearances and rugs
The quick answer
Leave at least 24 in (60 cm) of walkway on each side of the bed you walk around (30–36 in (75–90 cm) is more comfortable), and 36 in (90 cm) in front of dressers and closets. Choose nightstands within about 2 in (5 cm) of the mattress top, and a rug that extends 18–24 in (45–60 cm) beyond each side of the bed.
A bedroom works best when it's simple: a bed placed well, enough space to move around it, light where you need it and as little clutter as possible. These measurements help you plan it.
Choose the right bed size for your room
| Bed (US) | Mattress size | Bed (metric, typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 × 75 in | Single, 90 × 200 cm |
| Full / double | 54 × 75 in | Double, 140 × 200 cm |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in | King (UK 150, EU 160) × 200 cm |
| King | 76 × 80 in | Super king, 180 × 200 cm |
Mattress names and sizes differ between countries, so always compare the actual measurements. Add the frame or headboard, which can make a bed several inches (or centimeters) larger than the mattress.
Bedroom clearances
| Space | Minimum | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Beside the bed (walkway) | 24 in (60 cm) | 30–36 in (75–90 cm) |
| Foot of the bed to wall or furniture | 24 in (60 cm) | 36 in (90 cm) |
| In front of a dresser or closet | 36 in (90 cm) | 40–42 in (100–105 cm) |
To check if a bed fits, add the bed width to the walkway on each side. If it doesn't fit comfortably, choose a smaller bed or push one side against a wall (common in kids' rooms and guest rooms).
Where to put the bed
- Place the headboard against the longest solid wall, ideally facing the door.
- Avoid placing the bed under a window if you can; it's harder to dress and can be draughty.
- Leave a clear path from the door to each side of the bed.
Nightstands and lamps
Choose nightstands within about 2 in (5 cm) of the mattress top, and 20–28 in (50–70 cm) wide. Bedside lamps should put the bottom of the shade around shoulder height when you sit up in bed. Wall-mounted reading lights save space in small rooms. Use warm white bulbs (2700 K) for a restful room.
Rug size under a bed
| Bed | Rug size |
|---|---|
| Full / double | 5 × 8 ft (160 × 230 cm) |
| Queen | 8 × 10 ft (200 × 300 cm) |
| King | 9 × 12 ft (240 × 340 cm) |
Place the rug so it starts just in front of the nightstands and extends 18–24 in (45–60 cm) beyond the sides and foot of the bed, so your feet land on something soft. Runners on each side work well in tight rooms.
Art above the bed
Hang art 6–10 in (15–25 cm) above the headboard, about two-thirds the width of the bed. Use lightweight frames and secure hanging hardware above a bed.
Frequently asked questions
How much space do you need around a bed?
At least 24 in (60 cm) on each side you walk around, and 30–36 in (75–90 cm) for comfort.
How tall should a nightstand be?
Within about 2 in (5 cm) of the top of the mattress.
What size rug goes under a queen bed?
Usually 8 × 10 ft (about 200 × 300 cm), extending 18–24 in (45–60 cm) beyond the sides of the bed.
Should a bed face the door?
Ideally, yes. A bed on the wall facing the door usually feels calm and balanced, and keeps the path to both sides clear.
