How to hang curtains: height, width and length

The quick answer

Hang the curtain rod at least 4–6 in (10–15 cm) above the window frame (or halfway to the ceiling for more height), extend it 6–10 in (15–25 cm) past each side, and choose curtains that just touch the floor. The total width of fabric should be 1.5 to 2 times the window width.

Well-hung curtains are a designer trick that costs almost nothing. Hung high and wide, they make windows look bigger, ceilings look taller and the whole room feel more finished.

Curtain rod height

Mount the rod at least 4–6 in (10–15 cm) above the top of the window frame. For a taller look, go halfway between the frame and the ceiling, or just below the ceiling or crown molding. Higher curtains draw the eye up, and the room feels taller.

Curtain rod width

Extend the rod 6–10 in (15–25 cm) past each side of the window frame. When the curtains are open, they'll stack on the wall instead of covering the glass, so you get more light and the window looks wider.

Curtain length

Curtains should just touch the floor or hover no more than ½ in (1 cm) above it. Measure from the rod (or from where the rings or hooks hold the fabric) down to the floor. Curtains that stop short look like they've shrunk. Curtains that pool on the floor look romantic but collect dust and suit formal rooms best.

About 96 in (244 cm)96 in (244 cm)
About 108 in (274 cm)108 in (274 cm)

Choose the rod height first, then buy the matching curtain length, rather than the other way around. If you're between sizes, hem longer curtains instead of buying short ones.

Curtain fullness

For curtains that look full when closed, the combined width of all panels should be 1.5 to 2 times the width of the rod. Flat, stretched curtains look cheap, even when the fabric isn't.

Renting?

Tension rods and freestanding curtain rails need no drilling. Many landlords also agree to a curtain rod if you ask and offer to fill the holes when you leave.
