Coffee table size guide
The quick answer
Choose a coffee table about two-thirds the length of your sofa, the same height as the seat (or up to 2 in (5 cm) lower), and place it 16–20 in (40–50 cm) from the sofa.
A coffee table that's too big blocks the room. One that's too small looks lost and leaves you leaning to reach your cup. Three simple numbers get it right.
Coffee table length
About two-thirds the length of your sofa. For an 84 in (213 cm) sofa, look for a table around 50–58 in (127–150 cm) long.
| Sofa length | Coffee table length |
|---|---|
| 72 in (183 cm) | 43–50 in (110–128 cm) |
| 84 in (213 cm) | 50–58 in (128–150 cm) |
| 96 in (244 cm) | 58–67 in (146–170 cm) |
Coffee table height
Level with the sofa seat, or up to 2 in (5 cm) lower. Most sofa seats are 17–19 in (43–48 cm) high.
Distance from the sofa
16–20 in (40–50 cm): close enough to reach a drink, with enough room for legs. Leave at least 30 in (75 cm) on the sides people walk past.
Round or rectangular?
- Rectangular suits long sofas and larger rooms.
- Round or oval suits small rooms, sectionals and homes with children, as there are no corners to bump into.
- Two nesting tables work well in small spaces and can be pulled apart for guests.
How to style a coffee table
Use the "tray and three" formula: a tray or stack of books as a base, then something tall, something medium and something low. Leave at least half the table clear.
Side tables
Side tables should be within about 2 in (5 cm) of the sofa arm height. Keep them simple: a lamp, one small object and room for a cup.
