Living room lighting: how many lamps you need, and where
The quick answer
Use three to five light sources in a living room, not counting the ceiling light, spread around the room at different heights. Combine ambient, task and accent lighting, and use warm white bulbs of 2700–3000 K throughout.
Lighting changes how a room feels more than almost anything else. Most living rooms rely on one ceiling light, which makes the room flat and harsh at night. Layering light fixes that, often for the price of one lamp and a few bulbs.
The three layers of light
Ambient light
The general light that fills the room: ceiling lights, downlights or a pendant. Put it on a dimmer if you can.
Task light
Focused light for reading or hobbies, such as a floor lamp beside a reading chair or a table lamp next to the sofa.
Accent light
Soft, decorative light that creates atmosphere: a lamp on a shelf, a picture light, LED strips or candles.
How many lamps does a living room need?
Aim for three to five, placed in a rough triangle or circle so no corner is dark. Larger rooms need more: add about one light source for every extra 100 sq ft (10 m²) beyond 160 sq ft (15 m²).
Lamp heights
- Table lamps: the bottom of the shade should sit near seated eye level, so you see soft light rather than a bare bulb. Lamp plus table usually comes to 55–63 in (140–160 cm).
- Reading lamps: slightly behind and to the side of the chair, with the shade around shoulder height when seated.
- Pendants over walkways: at least 7 ft (210 cm) from the floor to the bottom of the light.
The best bulb color for a living room
Choose warm white, 2700–3000 K, and keep every bulb in the room the same color. Cool white (4000 K and above) suits kitchens and workspaces, not living rooms.
Five quick lighting upgrades
- Add a dimmer to the main light.
- Swap cool bulbs for warm white.
- Add one table lamp and one floor lamp.
- Put lamps on smart plugs so they switch on together.
- Light the darkest corner. It makes the room feel bigger.
Frequently asked questions
How many lamps should a living room have?
Three to five light sources plus the ceiling light, spread around the room at different heights.
What color light is best for a living room?
Warm white, 2700–3000 K. Keep all bulbs in the room the same color temperature.
Where should lamps go in a living room?
In a rough triangle around the room: beside the sofa, next to a reading chair and in a dark corner or on a shelf.
Is a ceiling light enough for a living room?
Rarely. A single overhead light makes a room flat. Add lamps at lower heights for warmth.
