What size rug for a living room?

The quick answer

For most living rooms, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and every chair to sit on it. It should extend 6–8 in (15–20 cm) past each end of the sofa and leave 8–18 in (20–45 cm) of bare floor at the walls. In an average living room, that's usually an 8 × 10 ft (200 × 300 cm) rug.

A rug that's too small is the single most common living room mistake. It makes furniture look like it's floating, breaks the room into islands and makes the whole space feel smaller. The good news: once you know the rule, choosing the right size takes two minutes and a tape measure.

Two rug layouts that work, and one to avoid

Designers almost always use one of two placements, because both anchor the seating into one zone. The third, a small rug floating in the middle, is the one to avoid.

Left to right: all legs on, front legs on, and too small.

1. All legs on the rug

Every piece of seating sits fully on the rug. This looks luxurious and works best in large rooms or open-plan spaces, where the rug defines the living zone.

2. Front legs on the rug

The front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug, and the back legs sit on the floor. This is the most versatile option and works in almost any room. It's what most designers choose.

3. Floating: the one to avoid

A small rug that doesn't touch any furniture makes the seating look scattered and the room feel smaller. The only exception is a very small room, where a rug can sit just in front of the sofa, as long as it's nearly as wide as the sofa. Smaller than that, it looks like a doormat.

Standard sizes vary a little between countries and brands, so pick the closest one available. If you're torn between two sizes, choose the larger one. You'll almost never regret it.

How to work out your exact rug size

  1. Measure your sofa from arm to arm. Your rug should be at least 12–16 in (30–40 cm) longer than this.
  2. Measure the room. Subtract 16 in (40 cm) from each dimension to leave a border of floor. That's your maximum.
  3. Choose the standard size that sits between those two numbers.
  4. Test it with painter's tape. Mark the outline on the floor and live with it for a day before you buy.

Common rug mistakes

  • Too small: the most common mistake by far. Size up.
  • Off-center: center the rug on the seating area, not on the room.
  • Too close to the walls: leave a strip of floor showing, or it looks like wall-to-wall carpet.
  • Ignoring the coffee table: it should sit fully on the rug, with space all around it.

Can you layer rugs?

Yes. If the rug you love only comes in a small size, put a large, plain jute or flat-weave rug underneath it. The top rug should be about two-thirds the size of the base rug, and the two should share at least one color.

Frequently asked questions

Should the rug go under the sofa?

Ideally, at least the front legs of the sofa should sit on the rug. It connects the sofa to the rest of the seating and makes the room feel larger.

What is the most common living room rug size?

8 × 10 ft (about 200 × 300 cm) suits most average living rooms with a three-seat sofa.

How much floor should show around a rug?

Leave about 8–18 in (20–45 cm) of floor between the rug and the walls.

Is a 5 × 8 rug too small for a living room?

Usually, yes, unless the room is small or the sofa is a loveseat. In most rooms a 5 × 8 ft rug can't reach the front legs of all the seating.
